Custom Vinyl Records: A Buyer’s Guide
Vinyl stopped being a gamble
Pressing vinyl used to mean a thousand-unit minimum and a six-month wait, which is why only labels did it. Short-run pressing changed the math for everyone: a band, a wedding couple or a brand can now press a dozen real records and have them in two weeks.
Pick the format for the job
A full album wants a 12-inch LP at 33 rpm. A single or a keepsake wants a 7-inch at 45. Display pieces want picture discs; collector editions want color or splatter. The format decision is just a question of what the record is for.
Audio quality starts with your files
A record can only be as good as the master it is cut from. Send full-resolution WAVs, not MP3s, and let the engineer flag anything too loud, too long or too bass-heavy for the groove. A good pressing plant tells you before pressing, not after.
The package is half the product
People buy vinyl to hold it. A pressed disc in a plain white sleeve is a demo; the same disc in a printed jacket with an inner sleeve and an insert is a release. Budget for the packaging as seriously as the pressing.
